Here’s an interesting find. The Royal Academy of Music (RAM) provide an ‘advice sheet’ to their students entitled Setting up a website.
Excitement however, is slightly short lived, as the sheet advises that they ‘do it themselves’, and even goes on to recommend the use of Microsoft Front Page (a tool seemingly built to help amateurs create bad websites). Seems a bit of a waste of time—music students learning the ins and outs of HTTP and FTP, just so they can put some nice photos and a biography somwhere on the web. Isn’t there practice to be done?
One of the defining features of the web is that anyone can put content up in the public domain after just a few hours experimenting with the right software. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. If it’s a site promoting your business then you almost certainly shouldn’t, because you might end up with something like this.
The RAM employs recognised professionals for their web design work, so isn’t it strange how they fob their own students off with indifferent advice such as this.
The recognised professionals mentioned above have since moved their home page, thereby breaking the link to their site. Strange behaviour - anyone would think they don’t like people talking about their work. Find them now at www.silverworks.com.
